“YOU DON’T WIN BY GIVING UP”
The John McLaughlin Story
Even with as many years of experience John McLaughlin has had as a Meteorologist for KCCI TV8, even he could never have predicted the storm that would shake his world.
His name is recognizable to hundreds of thousands of people as a celebrity in central Iowa and beyond. He is legendary in his field of Meteorology for over 30 years at KCCI TV8 in central Iowa and is known for so much more. Our interview however, focused attention on a different kind of storm that not even he (as good as he is) could have predicted. Just as a tornado ravages a community, this storm has forced this man to take personal inventory of what he has left to live for and perhaps re-order his priorities. This particular storm is extremely rare but for some it could be categorized as an F5. It’s called Sarcoidosis.
Sarcoidosis can be difficult to diagnose because the disease produces few signs and symptoms in its early stages. When symptoms do occur, they may mimic those of other disorders. Sarcoidosis is the growth of tiny collections of inflammatory cells (granulomas) in different parts of your body — most commonly the lungs, lymph nodes, eyes and skin.
According to Mayo doctors, sarcoidosis results from the body’s immune system responding to an unknown substance, most likely something inhaled from the air. Mayo says there is no cure for sarcoidosis, but most people do very well with modest treatment. In half of cases, sarcoidosis goes away on its own. In a few cases, however, sarcoidosis may last for years, take you down, and may cause organ damage. This is very serious stuff to say the least.
This interview reveals the depth of faith of a man who is experiencing tremendous upheaval in his life both physically and financially. A strong-minded man to be sure, yet everyone has their breaking point – even John.
Among his numerous profound quotes in this interview John said that one of his thoughts when he was first diagnosed was, “How could I use this disease to help others”?
Written by John:
“Life has changed so dramatically. Who would have thought the guy that flies all morning, does TV weather in the evening and teaches defensive firearms on the weekend would get handed an lifetime auto immune disease that has slowed me down to 1/4 throttle” says John McLaughlin who is known by hundreds of thousands of people throughout Iowa and beyond as the lead Meteorologist for KCCI TV8 out of Des Moines, Iowa.”
“Perhaps it is my personal health battle, or the fact I am 52, but it is time to focus on what is really important. I have a lot of time to think now about topics other than radar and severe storms meteorology.”
“I am waiting patiently to find out why God has allowed this to happen to me. I have strong faith that despite the crushing financial and health setback, the future is just fine.”
“But I can no longer just tell you weather and radar facts, or share the latest helicopter story. You need to know I care about each of you and would be failing my duties commanded in Matthew 28:19 if I didn’t share some of my faith.
“If you look at the media as a whole, there are a lot of TV meteorologists who are believers. Perhaps it’s because we are trained scientifically and analytically yet grasp the fact that all this didn’t happen by accident. Over the years (as your Meteorologist) I’ve looked after you in the middle of the night to keep you safe. Now I want to make sure we will spend eternity together too.”
Another message of hope is coming your way – another testimony to God’s faithfulness has now been preserved on the I’VE BEEN THERE website!!
